Vikings are a very strong army from the Shieldwall supplement. Basically very good infantry, the best of which are the Hirdmen who cause Fear in enemy troops of leadership 7 or less. The Hirdmen can stand toe to toe with the best infantry in the game and have an even chance of winning. Against weaker troops, it is almost a walk-over. Their problem is the lack of numbers, weak armour and unless you use 2 handed axes, low strength. So for my units of Hirdmen I opt for mainly axemen with a rear rank of throwing spears.
Properly used beserkers will do fearful damage to an enemy force, if you get lucky. Most opponents will not put their good units anywhere near the Hirdmen until the beserkers are gone. A fact you can use to your advantage when using a Viking army.
The figures are a mix of the old GW Norse range, Gripping Beast and Essex Miniatures, with Essex providing the majority. Painting was by James Roach of the Olicana Painting Service. Most of the shield designs are my own Veni Vidi Vici range (Dark Age, DD3 and DD4).
